EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured trauma-focused model of therapy with strong research evidence that it can help to reduce symptoms related to experiences of adversity, overwhelming stress, or traumatic experiences. Symptoms may include physical sensations or emotions that you can’t control, intense memories that take over your mind, nightmares, negative thoughts and moods, or even feeling disconnected from the world around you, or periods. EMDR is a collaborative process that involves extensive assessment and supporting clients in stabilizing emotional and physiological responses before addressing the more painful thoughts and memories. Clients maintain full agency (stop, slow down, continue) over the process with respect to each individual’s experiences, needs, and preferences. EMDR aims to decrease the physiological and emotional intensity associated with difficult memories as they are reprocessed within the context of a safe and warm process.

Dr. Thompson was trained with EMDR Consulting, an EMDRIA approved training, in 2018 and routinely seeks consultation with a Certified EMDR Consultant to ensure high quality care.

Couples and Family Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) focuses on the relationships most important to us by diving into patterns of communication that keep us stuck in hurtful cycles. EFT does not focus on who is to blame for problems in the relationships, but focuses on slowing conversations to better understand the ways we seek connection with our loved ones and protect ourselves from pain. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) aims to restore trust and security in romantic and partnered relationships while Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) aims to improve caregiver-child and whole family relationships.

Dr. Thompson was initially trained, supervised, and mentored in EFT in 2010; trained in EFFT in 2017; and completed her externship in EFT in 2024. Dr. Thompson is a member of ICEFFT.

Because of Dr. Thompson’s experience, training, and interest in the following models, her approach often incorporates both neuroscience-informed and family systems concepts. Dr. Thompson has also been trained in other models including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (training only), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Nationally Certified), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (training only). Dr. Thompson works with each client and family to determine an approach that fits each person or family’s unique situation and preferences.
